Collab Mad: Alexander Wang Poised For Uniqlo

Prepare for total chaos.

Prepare for total chaos. The highly anticipated guest collection by Alexander Wang for Uniqlo is poised to hit stores by the end of May. Pictures of the collection have started to circulate, so expect a building sense of consumer anxiety over the next two months. As big business and hot designer collaborations go, this one is about as brilliant as Kate Moss for Topshop. That is, many of Wang's fans are those more likely to recreate his aesthetic with thrift store finds, given the retail price. It's a safe bet, then, that Wang's collection for the Japanese retail chain will sell out immediately. With eight exclusive looks priced between $29 and $79 dollars, Wang fans will have access to this sliver of fashion history, just as long as they're able to wait in line.

Handbags

Oversized Clutches in 2008

As women's everyday bags have reached epic proportions, downsizing for evening has become nearly impossible.

As women's everyday bags have reached epic proportions, downsizing for evening has become nearly impossible. Once upon a time, the contents of a ladies purse included a wallet and tube of lipstick, now handbags easily accomodate changes of clothing, cans of hairspray, and even small animals. A natural conclusion is an expansion in evening purse standards. The oversized clutch can accomodate more than just some lipstick but retains the need for good posture, the quality that makes the strapless thing desirable in the first place. Erva, an up and coming European line, designed some beautiful oversized clutches for both Spring and Fall 2008 (pictured here). With a bag that measures just over a foot long, and 7" high, we imagine you'll have the space for what, in today's world, is considered basic.

Fashion Journalism From 'Learning To Love You More'

Assignment #55: Photograph A Significant Outfit.

Assignment #55: Photograph A Significant Outfit. Miranda July, every twenty-something's favorite writer/director/artist, started the website'Learning To Love You More' with artist Hermann Fletcher in 2002. The premise is simple, 'assignments' are posed and visitors complete the assignments and submit their responses thereafter. The assignments require no money or intellectual wherewithall and, as explained on the site, are 'intended to to guide people towards their own experience.' Among 'Make an Encouraging Banner' and 'Draw A Picture of Your Friend's Friend' is assignment #55, 'Photograph A Significant Outfit'.

The results from assignment #55 span every occasion and sentiment, and include captions like "What I wore on the last day of school' and 'What I was wearing when he saw me from the ferris wheel (and my heart beat a million miles an hour and I blew a kiss to him).' Per the instructions, outfits are lain on the ground, shirts tucked into pants, socks peeking out from trousers, and photographed in all their significant/insignificant glory. Because we haven't the time to plan our outfits weeks in advance and because we cannot predict events that will ultimately transform our lives, we think this assignment really touches on a peculiar but important distinction. Namely, that clothes are an extension of self, but never, dare we say it, are things the other way around.
