Monique Lhuillier Fall Winter 2008 Fashion Show
Monique Lhuillier Fashion Show and Interview
dance of the sugar plum punk
>> At Rodarte, Laura and Kate Mulleavy riffed on "Japanese horror films" with agressively studded Louboutin shoes, deathly pale faces, and plenty of blood red.
I admit, before seeing Rodarte in motion — and in person — I was a little confused about the hype surrounding the label. But after seeing the loosely-woven tights, the angora dresses, the punky sugar plum fairies zig zag past, I am converted.
Not many designers can take two such contrasting looks — pretty, pretty princess and Sid Vicious — and make them mesh so well together. It was clear that the girls were still exploring a few elements from Spring: the Degas-esque tutu dresses, the studded shoes, the draped and pleated chiffon dresses, the metallic fitted pants; when I asked Kate about it, she told me they "were just trying to find [their] thing." But by no means were they mired in a past collection — and I look forward to seeing where the whimsical Mulleavy girls go from here.

MAC Pulling Out All The Stops
We've been keeping our eye on the MAC teams this week and this afternoon, backstage at Behnaz Sarafpour, we were most impressed. Drawing from a palette that included flashes of acid green and deep plum, MAC sprayed these girls with a new product they're soon launching, which brightens even the most tired eyes. For the rest of the face, MAC keep it neutral with a matte cheek and glossed lips. Video of this technique and of tonight's show to you shortly.
Backstage at Karen Walker Fall 2008

We're backstage at the Karen Walker show right now, talking to the MAC team about the makeup (sweet, blanked out pinks and nudes) and shooting the girls during their run-through and preparations. The atmosphere is very calm, Walker is sitting front row, watching the girls walk the runway, with half finished makeup, combs sticking out of hair. The girls seem especially friendly, everyone's kind of goofing off together while an older woman approaches the microphone and asks them to listen to something they've heard a million times: walk to the end of the runway, turn, walk back. There are a few mom's here, reading books. In the pit the guys are catching up and talking about the shows, some complaints about back pain (we here ya buddy). Overall, a very nice vibe here compared to most. It would make us not want to return to the tents, except, we've Mastroianni to look forward to. Until then.

We were just Backstage at Monique Lhuillier. And wow are we taking a shine to her collection. In fact everything is literally quite shiny. Our inner magpie was in heaven.
