CoCo Chanel

First Look: Anna Mouglalis in Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky

>> We recently got a look at Audrey Tautou as Gabrielle Chanel in Coco avant Chanel; now it's time for a first look at Anna Mouglalis as Coco in rival film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.  The latter, directed by Jan Kounen, focuses mostly on a six-week period in the life of Chanel and Russian composer Igor Stravinsky (played by Mads Mikkelsen, best known as Le Chiffre from Bond movie Casino Royale), when they are believed to have had an affair.

Filming is currently under way — recently in Paris, scenes were being shot at the Museum of Natural History with Mouglalis in a sober black dress and cloche hat — and the race is on to complete the movie before Coco avant Chanel hits screens next year.  Both leading ladies are coincidentally (or perhaps not so much) Chanel brand ambassadors — Mouglalis for the Allure fragrance, Tautou for Chanel No.5, and Karl Lagerfeld has been assisting with costumes on both movies — for Mouglalis, he created at least two outfits, including an evening gown for scenes at Stravinsky's controversial "Le Sacre du Printemps" ballet opening.

Pitting two movies against one another seems very much in the Chanel vein — a couple of weeks ago, Mouglalis described her character to reporters: "Coco Chanel had to fight to succeed."  Besides, what kind of fashion movies would they be without a little drama on the side?

Vogue

>> INSIDER WIRE —Is "Change!"

>> INSIDER WIRE —Is "Change!" afoot, as the January 2009 cover of Vogue touts?  Despite all the rumors otherwise, it looks like Anna Wintour is staying put — just like Si Newhouse said.  According to "industry sources" — the numbers aren't publicly released — Vogue "was the most profitable magazine [for Conde Nast] this year."  Which in theory means good things for dear Anna — but it's always important to remember that Grace Mirabella, who Wintour replaced, tripled Vogue's circulation and built the magazine to be one of the "consistently largest advertising-revenue producers of any publication in America," but was still unceremoniously sacked when she was no longer taking risks — a fault that an increasing number would say Anna has. Kate Moss

Kate Moss and Sasha Pivovarova Pair Up for Longchamp Spring 2009

>> Kate Moss is the long-term face of Longchamp — Spring 2006 and counting — but in recent seasons, she's gone from solo act to one of a duo.  For Fall 2008, she was paired with French actor Gaspard Ulliel, and for Spring 2009, she shares face time with fellow floppy-banged, blonde-haired, kohl-eyed model Sasha Pivovarova.  Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott did the honors again, this time going for a much more color-saturated campaign than last season's study in black and white, and showcasing the brand's new foray into ready-to-wear.*image: source

Louis Vuitton

>> BLOWING THE COVER —W Magazine is ringing in the new year with a model on the cover of their January 2009 issue — Christy Turlington — but don't expect it to be a trend.  Arianne Phillips — who just finished costuming Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man — is headed to Rio de Janeiro later this week to shoot an upcoming W cover with Madonna and Steven Klein.  Their last collaboration produced the iconic 2006 Equus-inspired shoot, so hopefully this round will be just as picturesque — and will probably include more Louis Vuitton.

Pucci

A Change Of Hands: A Recap Of Brands Under New Leadership This Season

One of the more exciting things to watch for during Fashion Week are those brands and fashion houses that have recently come under new leadership.

One of the more exciting things to watch for during Fashion Week are those brands and fashion houses that have recently come under new leadership. With Fashion Week just a few months away, we think this list will get anyone's heart racing...

Print expert and all-around bright-ray-of-fashion-sunshine Matthew Williamson left Pucci after his first season with the brand. Click here to see the Spring 2009 Pucci collection, and, to learn more about his departure, check out Fashionologie's report.

Just last week it was announced that Amanda Wakeley's Spring 09 collection would be presented without her. This season's Fall 09 presentation should be a chilly one. Click here to see Wakeley's Spring 09 collection

Pheobe Philo resigned from her position as Creative Director at Chloe in 2006 so that she could spend more time with her family. Philo recently signed on to become Celine's new Creative Director (with the stipulation that she could work from London) and her debut collection for the brand will hit the catwalks in Paris this March. Click here to see the Celine Spring 2009 collection

There were no departures more dramatic than those at Valentino and Bill Blass. In both cases, news broke in the midst of Fashion Week madness and, in the case of Bill Blass, it followed that the company was liquidating. Though Blass is no longer, Valentino lives on. Let's just hope this season is a peaceful one.

Inauguration Sketches For Barack Obama

Barack Obama has already selected a Hart Schaffner Marx suit for inauguration night, but that didn't stop WWD from putting menswear designers to the test.

Barack Obama has already selected a Hart Schaffner Marx suit for inauguration night, but that didn't stop WWD from putting menswear designers to the test. Not only do we find these sketches fascinating (some headless, some digitally rendered, some downright creepy) we also think WWD brings up a good point: menswear has a new icon to dress and an opportunity for his presence to breathe some life back into the genre. Having appeared on the cover of every popular men's fashion magazine in recent months, there's no doubt Obama is an influence to menswear. As for Michelle, don't even get us started on how much fun fashion is having hypothetically dressing their soon-to-be first lady. Check out links to such happenings right here.

Zero + Maria Cornejo Pre-Fall 2009

In the most recent issue of The Journal Maria Cornejo talked about her newfound excitement for prints and we are delighted to see so many of them in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection.

In the most recent issue of The Journal Maria Cornejo talked about her newfound excitement for prints and we are delighted to see so many of them in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection. Judging by her statements in the interview and the appearance of print in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection, we can probably expect some great prints from the Fall 2009 collection. That said, all of those fashion gals who depend on Cornejo for their all-black winter uniform will probably still be in good shape--we doubt the designer will abandon her aesthetic completely.
