where are we going from here?

>>  Is it the end of a "designer century"?  Every once in a while, Suzy Menkes publishes an absolutely standout article, and yesterday was one of those days.    She explored the idea that there will soon no longer be room for designers like Karl Lagerfeld or Yves Saint Laurent -- who built up up a cult of personality and very much have the focus of the brand on themselves.  "Brand managers now believe that too much focus on the designer is detrimental... New designers are being tapped more for their ability to come up with saleable merchandise than for their charisma."    It will definitely be interesting to see how the increasing corporatization of designers plays out in the next decade or so, especially since character has played such a part in the success of designers for so long now (Karl, Yves, Coco, John Galliano... the list goes on).

vintage kate

>>  She's referred to as "fashion's great sphinx" -- a silent image -- so I love to catch snippets of her talking.  Not in a commercial -- that's rehearsed.  Just candidly.  This is a short clip of Kate doing a photoshoot with Corinne Day taken from Day's BBC documentary.  It's from the Jefferson Hack years, and she's quite adorable.  Just don't watch it at work -- she's -- in true Kate form -- quite naked.EDIT:  So the video has been taken down from YouTube, probably because they're sticklers about nudity...  There's a shorter clip from the same movie below, unfortunately it's not as good, but it's all I've got for you...

vintage linda

>>  I absolutely love love love the personality caught in this photo.  The tartan Linda's wearing may be tailored Oscar de la Renta, but it still gives that punkish undertone, especially combined with her face and the fact that she looks like she's about to kick the guy's head off.  Funny that this is from a US Vogue editorial in 1991 by Arthur Elgort, because it could definitely fit right in a fall magazine today -- the tartan, the black tights, the ankle boots...
