Posts for December 2005

and the list of must-have january magazines grows...

>> First there was the French Vogue...now this.  What appears to be a very airbrushed Mary Kate Olsen graces the cover of the January 2006 W.  I'm sure many people will be very pleased to see this, but I can't say that it really does anything for me... I expected to see more of her... The issue comes out December 23, and apparently inside Mary-Kate talks about her heartbreak and why she left school in New York.  As for Stravros Niarchos III, who she dated all summer and recently broke up with, she told the magazine:  "I miss him and I love him and I don't speak with him anymore.  It's a hurtful and painful subject.

I've pretty much been with someone my whole life, so this is a hard time for me."  Apparently she actually introduced Stavros to Paris Hilton. When those two were spotted canoodling in nightclubs in September, a frazzled Mary-Kate abruptly took a leave of absence from NYU and moved back to Los Angeles to "pursue her acting career."

"New York was really hectic for Mary-Kate," explains Senior Editor Marshall Heyman, who did the interview for W. "Lots of paparazzi, lots of gossip reports, lots of school. But in L.A. she has time for herself."

a match made in heaven?

>> Eeeek.  So.  Excited.  Can't.  Breathe.  There are rumors that Roland Mouret will take over for Pheobe Philo if she does indeed leave Chloe.  Originally, Roland's name was thrown around along with Helmut Lang and Jil Sander as possible successors, but now Vogue UK is reporting that M Mouret is first in line.  Eeeek!

Now that I've had time to calm down a bit, I'm wondering.  Would this really be a good match?  I mean, for Spring/Summer, Chloe was doing tent dresses while Roland Mouret was doing fitted 40's-style.  But it would be good to have M Mouret back so soon...

>>  Let's just savor the beautiful styling of the January 2006 cover of Elle -- a moment of silence, please.  Okay, now that that's over... wow.  Never thought I would see the day that had Scarlett Johanssen with Rod Stewart's hair.  But look!  Here it is!  And in case we weren't getting enough of that "cool rocker" vibe, the raccoon eyes are subtly hinting at that as well.  Top-notch... Except not.

>> As if those beautiful covers weren't enough, Fashion Week Daily, has spilled even more beans on that December issue of Vogue Paris we've all been panting after.  And they got the lovely Mme Carine Roitfeld, editor of Vogue Paris, to do the spilling:

Roitfeld, in an interview from Los Angeles, said that her Dec. issue, which hits newsstands in the next week and was shot entirely in New York, was originally planned as four covers. The catch? “David Sims, Craig McDean, Mario Sorrenti, and Mario Testino were each supposed to shoot one cover and do a story with Kate inside,” she said. “But Kate basically disappeared for a month after only Craig had shot her, so we had to go with four of his shots.” In fact, had the project gone forward as planned, the McDean shot that would have actually achieved cover status would’ve been the one that featured Moss in the Dior Homme jacket and Superfine jeans.

As a result of having to check into rehab, the issue... was altered slightly. Roitfeld also noted several changes that occurred as a result. One story, for example, had Moss in all spring 2006 clothing that she herself chose and would wear out and about, whether to a black-tie or to the park. The Vogue team wanted to play off of the fact that women everywhere emulate Moss’s style, and through this story, these women would be able to get an advanced look at Moss’ spring style. “Kate is not a model for me; she’s an icon,” Roitfeld admitted. “She’s like the new Marilyn Monroe.” A planned story incorporating two of Moss’ favorite artists, Dinos and Jake Chapman, did make it into the issue.

Secondly, the decision was made not to give Moss top billing this time—unlike past editors like Sofia Coppola and Catherine Deneuve. Instead, she will be listed as a “special guest editor.”

And thirdly, in lieu of Moss’ photo on the editor’s letter page, Roitfeld dutifully stepped in after the supermodel was unavailable, posing in a custom-made shirt by Ricardo Tisci with the word “Kate” emblazoned across the chest. “It was the best I could do,” Roitfeld offered. As for the post-rehab photo that Moss gave the magazine to use, Roitfeld describes it as a “Thelma & Louise photo…in a convertible with the wind in her hair.”

Scrumptious.  To read the rest, venture over this way

>> Continuing the trend of celebrity ad campaigns, Selma Blair has been tapped as the new face of Chanel -- Chanel Vision, that is.  Kaiser Karl photographed her himself, and judging by the photo at left, I have to say he did not too shabby.  When asked about the campaign, Blair said: "I have a lovely relationship with Karl.  It's different to be shot by him.

I'm so comfortable in front of him. Sometimes when I work with other photographers, they say ‘Give me more Selma, more, more.' But they don't really know who I am. With Karl, he's capturing something that's more — my personal flaws, the way I am as a girl, not a model."
