Gucci

>> A LITTLE TURN ON THE CATWALK —Frida Giannini knows how to party.  For resort 2009, she can't let Chanel and Dior get the best of her, so she too is staging a full Gucci runway show, followed by a party, in Rome on July 8.   The whole ordeal celebrates Gucci's 70 years in Rome plus their newly renovated Roman flagship, but Frida couldn't wait another month to show the collection off, so she gave a preview yesterday in New York.  "It's a bit hippie but not too much." Yves Saint Laurent

Stefano Pilati Goes Video Happy for YSL Resort 2009

>>  For Stefano Pilati, video installation is the new runway show.  After showing his Fall 2008 Yves Saint Laurent menswear collection on video rather than the traditional catwalk presentation, Stefano chose the short film route again for the YSL Resort 2009 collection.  So that's the "innovative, new experience" hinted at was all about .

So that's the "innovative, new experience" hinted at was all about . . . I wonder if this new format is a way of cutting costs, or just the designer's personal preference?  Because me, I find the runway, or even a presentation, much preferred.

Balenciaga

Nicholas Ghesquiere Goes Soft for Balenciaga Resort 2009

>> Rather than giving us a hint of what's to come for Spring 2009 like most designers do with their resort collections, Nicholas Ghesquiere reworked his hard-edged Fall 2008 Balenciaga collection, softening the ideas up with pale pastels.  The result is similar, but not the same as Fall, and stays true to the sculptural shapes that have come to define Nicholas at Balenciaga.

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs Shows Love for YSL Quite Literally With Hearts Aplenty for Resort 2009

>>  Little did we know it at the time, but the Marc Jacobs dress that Victoria Beckham wore to the CFDA Awards Monday night was part of his Resort 2009 collection, which — get this — is a homage to Yves Saint Laurent.  As Marc put it, "Unfortunately, it's extremely timely," but does he have a weird sixth sense, or what?

Heart and bow motifs pervaded throughout, and together with mannish high-waisted suits, harem pants, and robe silhouettes, were a fitting ode to YSL.  After that, it was non-stop '80s for Marc — do you see the shoulder pads in that sheer blue dress?!  Metallic shoes, square shoulders, and rose prints filled out the riff on the over-the-top decade.

Amongst the salmon-colored sheaths and boyfriend blazers, Iekeliene Stange carried a bag full of rubber ducks, Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman chatted the gig away, a brass band provided music, and a hot dog cart supplied provisions, setting the mood for a carefree collection.

To see how many models can fit on one park bench (and more of the collection, too) check out the gallery below.
