>> In 2004, Terry Richardson told the Guardian UK: "I don't like to exploit anybody. That's not my bag. Everyone has fun on my shoots." But in the last couple of weeks, all kinds of lurid stories about his work habits are coming out of the woodwork.
It started last week when reports of Rie Rasmussen confronting the photographer on March 8 in Paris were published by the New York Post. The model, who said that Richardson manipulates young girls into posing for pictures in compromising situations, told the newspaper: "I told [Richardson] what you do is completely degrading to women. I hope you know you only [bleep] girls because you have a camera, lots of fashion contacts and get your pictures in Vogue. Instead of arguing with me, Terry ran out of the bar. Then the next day, he called my agency and complained I called him names in front of clients in Paris. It was the most cowardly thing I have ever seen."
Then, a week later, Jamie Peck recounted her experiences modeling for Richardson at 19, six years ago: "Of all the fine folks I’ve frolicked au naturel for, he’s the only one who’s left me feeling like I needed to take two showers." The photographer asked Peck to call him "Uncle Terry," and unexpectedly took off his clothes during her nude shoot before propositioning her for a handjob. "This is where I zoom out on the situation," Peck writes. "I can remember doing this stuff, but even at the time, it was sort of like watching someone else do it, someone who couldn’t possibly be me because I would never touch a creepy photographer’s penis." After she did the deed, Terry's assistant handed her a towel.
Yesterday, Jezebel published many more tales of Richardson's behavior. One model from the late '90s recounted a shoot for Arena Homme Plus, in which 30 models were gathered and each given a cover try: "Being familiar with Mr. Richardson's .....peccadillos, many of the models were eager to please; pleasing in this instance consisted primarily of pulling down pants, pulling up skirts, losing blouses, and a bit of finger sucking thrown in for good measure." When the storyteller approached Richardson and asked about his exploiting the dreams of models and whether he realized that they were acting in a way they thought might gain his favor, he replied: "I don't really think about that stuff. I guess you're smarter than me."
Another story, from the friend of a stylist who worked with Richardson: "She quit because of having to watch him sexually harrassing/abusing two (naked) teenage Eastern European models who didn't speak English — she didn't speak up and was so ashamed I don't think she did anymore styling for quite a while afterwards."
Terry regularly works with Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Interview, New York Times Magazine, Vogue Paris, British Vogue, i-D, V, and GQ; Jacob Bernstein, former features writer for W and WWD, wrote two days ago: "everyone in fashion knows Terry Richardson messes around with the girls he photographs . . . because they know it directly from Terry." Another anonymous fashion insider told Jezebel that modeling agencies "know full well Richardson's predatory behavior," but that he "is tolerated because the industry folk are just sheep. There are only a handful of photographers who have the power, a handful of editors who have the power, and a handful of clients who have the power. Everyone else just follows this small group of people. Those people in power, the women, need to take their responsibility for what happens to the girls because by booking him, they are tacitly giving their approval that whatever he does is OK."
There is one major magazine without recent Richardson credits, however: W. Two current and former W staffers confirmed to Jezebel that Richardson has not worked with the magazine in a while; another individual claimed that the most recent instance was in the November 1996 issue. There's a rumor that the ban on Richardson's work was instituted after W art director Dennis Freedman took offense to a photo by the photographer of a model with her head in an oven, but Freedman has yet to comment.
Meanwhile, Fashionista has polled a number of insiders, who don't seem to think all of the allegations will make a lasting impression — one drew comparisons to Kate Moss's cocaine scandal. And while Terry himself has not commented, as one Fashionista commenter pointed out: "He REMOVED all the images from his blog of him grabbing models breasts and posing with his thumb up and a grin next to bare asses. obviously there is some heat there."

Everyone knows that Terry shoots not only fashion but also some sexually charged photographs. Part of Terrys art, charm and talent is that he is willing to push the limits sexually. Making things in the fashion world a bit more interesting and not so stuffy and boring. Terry is a great guy and a very talented individual who in my opinion makes great art. I hate to see bitter non working models ruining someones reputation. Terry is a taste maker in this industry and I think these "models" need to stop running to the press to generate some buzz in their obvious stagnant careers.
Although what he does seems very unprofessional and downright disgusting, all these girls claim theyd never do these types of things and still find themselves slobbin' on his knob. Sounds like these models have motives and are just as guilty as Terry Richardson.
That's ridiculous. There may have been some models that were willing, but there were probably more girls that were uncomfortable and felt like they were forced into doing things with him. He shouldn't have taken advantage of those models. He's the one who ruined his reputation with his actions, regardless of how bitter or stagnant the careers of the models may be. It's horrible that "everyone in fashion" knew about this guy and didn't take measures to protect the girls. There are lines, as a human being, that shouldn't be crossed, even in the name of fashion.
AN OPEN LETTER TO TERRY RICHARDSON:
Terry,
You don't know me and I don't know you. And there's a bunch of people out there who think that they know you. And they keep saying things about everything that's been happening as of late. They say that you exploit girls. They are crucifying you like they crucify everyone eventually. And now I've heard that you've taken down some photos on your tumblr (which I have followed since you launched it) and I don't want you to give in to what everyone is saying. I need you to take photos just like you've always done and just like you always will. Your photos do something to me, Terry. Your photos are a revelation. We live in a place that sees sex as the end of all that is good and wholesome in the world and your photos are blunt and honest. They are fun and funny. Sex and sexy. This is getting a little long and I know that you are a very busy, busy man. I wish you the best of luck.
Goodbye.
Are you kidding me? You are talking about a man who uses and abuses women, NO girls. You are defending a CHILD MOLESTOR. This is one of the classic defense tactics: ignore and/or discredit the women who have been abused. Slander the victims. If this were untrue, then why are his subjects (not to mention the people he's worked with) popping up allegations left and right? Denying all of these claims is like saying that Tiger Woods never cheated on his wife; all the women must be lying, right?
I hope this sick and dirty old man gets what he's done. And to those who defend him, would you want your little sister to be photographed by Terry? What about your daughter? Your girlfriend? The woman who means the most to you in your life-would you let them near him after all of this?
I didn't think so.
HE SOUNDS LIKE A FREAK. IF HE WASN'T "FAMOUS" IT WOULD BE A HORROR STORY. HOW SCARY FOR THESE GIRLS. FREAK!
He is gross and screwed up. I think everyone defending him should be ashamed of themselves.
He can take naked pictures with willing models all day if he likes, but nothing on earth gives him the right to coerce young, barely-legal girls and ask them to use sexual favours (including stripping off when they're not comfortable with it) to get jobs with him. Being an open creep doesn't mean he's less of a creep.
I really love some of his work- his photographs of Obama, for instance- and the fact that his photographs don't come off as completely airbrushed and perfect. This behaviour, however, isn't sexy or lovable- it's just plain sexual harassment. Saying "that's how fashion is" etc doesn't make it ok.
This is not fashion! if a man does this to a women no matter
what he is or she is this is not right. This is basically porn. I dont know
why people think this is ok its not! what if he wasnt a famous photog
and he was doing this to girls that were trying to be models??
WHAT A JOKE!!! JAMIE PECK HAS TRULY EMBARRASSED HERSELF!!! "THEN I ZONED OUT" "I WOULD NEVER DO THAT" GUESS WHAT? YOU DID!!!!! AND NOW YOUR LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO BLAME BECAUSE YOU CANT FACE YOUR OWN LOOSE MORALS. WHO IS WORSE: THE MAN WHO ASKS FOR A HAND JOB OR THE GIRL THAT ACTUALLY DOES IT?
THESE ALLEGATIONS SO OBVIOUSLY REEK OF MOTIVE. TERRY IS THE MOST EMPLOYED PHOTOGRAPHER AND THESE GIRLS ARE NOBODIES...... GOOD LUCK TO THEM. THEY WILL NEED IT.
I BET IN A YEARS TIME WE WILL ALL BE ADMIRING AMAZING EDITORIALS BY TERRY AND NO ONE WILL EVER REMEMBER WHO THESE GIRLS ARE. JUST AS IT SHOULD BE.
the people offending terry should be shot. exploitation doesn't exist. a huge portion of his photographs are fantastic. The credit goes to both him and whatever model involved. I'd let him take pictures of me...in fact, i'd jerk him off just for the pleasure of being photographed.
If your boss pestered you to blow him if you wanted the promotion, we would all agree that's sexual harassment.
This guy's sexually harassing the women and girls he works with, period. It's not his art (plenty of nude photography and even HARDCORE PORN is made in a professional, respectful environment) but his behavior, that should be censured and stopped.
Let's not all just throw up our hands and say that's how Uncle Terry works, now send him the ones who don't speak English so they won't make a stink.
Terry,I have worked with you once,I have been to a party at your place in east village once,i meet you once at Virgin store in w.hollywood once, and at an opening in paris of your photos
once and I think you are a great professional and i love your work!!!!! Your work is ART!!! Keep
up the spirit and keep doing what you are good at!!! Don't listen to these GREY people....they
should GET A LIFE!!!!!
um, Terry Richardson is many things but he is not a child molestor, or even worse a CHILD MOLESTOR. Or are we all british tabloid writers and 15 and 16 year olds are literally children because they're a couple years shy of legal adulthood?
Terry Richardson's whole aesthetic and gimmick have become so trite that now he is nothing but a creator of kitschy self parody.
He only ever got a break because he was the son of a famous photographer, he never did anything beyond pushing limits, in the way only rich/famous kids can get famous for. I'll be glad when he stops getting big jobs. Even though he looks just like my dad, and I admit that I like seeing him in photos because it looks like my dad is a lecherous old photographer.
And another worthless anecdote, I have a few friends who've been photographed by him who didn't have anything negative to say, and a few who said he was too touchy but never explicitly went too far. Would anyone be surprised if he had crossed lines more than a few times? I don't think so, it's way he works. Especially if there was a language barrier involved. You know how poor communication can take playful joking to molestation, or vice versa.
But it's also important to remember that fashion is about sex, and it's dishonest to think your favorite designer doesn't regularly include overtly sexual elements in their designs. This continues to ads and editorials. It's only a problem here, because of girls are under a certain age, I would say girls could refuse to work with him, but we all know that there are less than a handful of models who have enough clout to turn down jobs and keep working. So let's just hope he goes away without embarrassing himself and fashion as a whole
It does come down to a small group of the core leaders in the industry that lead the pack and set standards for the rest to follow. Not much u can do to change such ingrained behavior. boy short
