Is the Roberto Cavalli woman getting tougher? For all the metal embellishments, the pointed shoulders, and the buttoned-up feeling of his Fall 2013 collection — there were no plunging necklines or overtly sexy statements to be found — you'd think the designer was dressing very chic warriors.

And in a way, he was. The show notes pointed to "a captivating and sensual armor effect" created by layering hardware onto some of the garments. The first few exits, mainly black dresses and coats, were covered in chains or little grommets. Where there wasn't metal, there were prints: a black floral print was cut into an elegant tuxedo jacket, while a multicolored design turned into trousers, a blazer, and a dress. Fur coats, or jackets with fur accents along the sleeves or lapels, seemed ready to protect their wearers from the worst of Winter, but so did the oversize bib necklaces tied tight around the models' necks.
But despite the embellishment and visual appeal, there was a sleek feeling to some of the garments. Cavalli used that cleanliness of line to prove he doesn't have to show skin to sell feminine strength, power, or sex appeal.
