Sales of both Margiela for H&M and Target and Neiman Marcus's holiday collaboration with the CFDA were lower than expected. And while a number of explanations have been given for the underwhelming numbers (the designs being too avant-garde in H&M's case and the offerings not being cohesive in Target's case), maybe people just aren't excited about collaborations anymore?
H&M, which has partnered with everyone from Karl Lagerfeld to Alber Elbaz, is already slowing down. The retailer said it would not feature a designer collaboration for Spring 2013, "as we have had so many this year."
That may mean it's time to focus on quality over quantity. Target's collaborations with Missoni and Jason Wu were bestsellers because they made brands people love accessible. Future collaborations should take time to focus on doing the same.
