New Years Resolutions For the Fashion Industry in 2013

No one's going to argue with the idea that fashion photography is an art form. What people regularly take issue with, however, is how often Photoshop is used to create something that doesn't come close to resembling reality.




Photographer Greg Kadel said he was "shocked and dismayed" that Numéro smoothed over the ribs in his photos of Karlie Kloss, and Coco Rocha was upset when Elle Brazil altered a photo to make it look like she was nude. A photograph of Doutzen Kroes (left) featured in the June 2012 issue of Vogue China makes her look as though she only has one leg.




"I think photoshopping is OK until something like that happens," Kroes said when she saw the photo. "You don't want to lose one of your limbs."




A little retouching is to be expected, but digitally chopping people's legs off is untenable. Worst of all, mistakes like this are a distraction from what the real focus of fashion photography should be: the fashion.
