It's been six years since the CFDA set down the rules for its Health Initiative, which, among other things, requires models who have eating disorders to seek professional help. All 19 international editions of Vogue adopted parts of the initiative into their professional guidelines this August. But even though designers agree to follow these rules every season, even the industry's biggest stars have been known to commit violations against it.
The fact is, health initiatives work. In 2010, the CFDA's version helped bring model Kim Noorda back from the brink of an eating disorder. And it's not just good for the models themselves: healthier models have been shown to boost body image in magazine readers. Overall, the initiative is designed to send the message that "beauty is health," and that's what we want to see: models who are beautiful, and healthy, too.
