News that Lee McQueen had been found dead in his London home broke on the first day of New York Fashion Week's Fall 2010 shows — just a few short weeks before he would have showed his own collection in Paris. The shock and sense of loss at his passing was so great that designers, models, buyers, editors, and other industry figures couldn't help but express their grief on Twitter or through deeply touching statements.

"Lee was a fashion genius," Stella McCartney told WWD. "I don't say that lightly, and it is a total shock that I am referring to him in the past tense. He was a real friend."

A memorial service followed in September, but perhaps the biggest tribute was the dedication of the 2011 Costume Institute exhibit to his work.
