Clare Waight Keller's show notes for Chloé's Fall 2013 collection described a myriad of inspirations: night buses, independent spirit, bare legs, bike sheds, flirting, cold nights, and tough girls. How all that translates to the actual pieces on the runway is anyone's guess, but that doesn't really matter. These were great clothes.
With the glass ceiling open wide to the sunny sky, the atmosphere in the big Tuileries tent in Paris was energetic and upbeat, while the lineup offered plenty of Chloé classics in updated shapes: wool pinafore dresses with utilitarian details, capes and coats with large gold snaps and trapeze backs, a plethora of straight-cut dresses with long sleeves, and pants with elastic bottoms or high waists and superwide legs. Fits were slim through the shoulders, and some nipped loosely at the natural waist, but otherwise these shapes fell generously around the body and over the legs; the result was a much more flattering take on this season's big volume trend. Colors and fabrics were equally wearable, with beautiful color combos: inky blue, cobalt, and black, for example, looked fresh and luxe when paired with rust, orange, baby blue, tomato, and mint.
