>> After a few rocky minutes of silence — and waiting for all the photographers to take their places — the audience at Phillip Lim's Spring 2012 show was ready to see some action. Instead, they got serenity in the shape of light-as-air separates and sherbet hues. Lim played with "free form" this season, employing weightless materials and geometric cuts to explore the spirit of kites in motion. On relaxed tops and dresses, fabric was left free at the seams where it caught air and floated away from the body, wing-like. On jackets and vests, the motif manifested in asymmetric folds, simple deconstruction, and fabrics in countering weights.
Hair Flipping and Spray Painting Backstage at Rodarte, Narciso Rodriguez, Oscar de la Renta, Sophie Theallet, Theyskens' Theory
>> Tuesday's snap-worthy backstage moments? Fei Fei Sun whipping her hair at Theyskens' Theory (plus a close-up at the show's tortuously vertiginous heels), Hanne Gaby Odiele getting her hair spray-painted blue at Narciso Rodriguez, plus: Carola Remer throwing a peace sign backstage at Sophie Theallet. Those moments and more — captured backstage at Oscar de la Renta and Rodarte — in the slideshow.

>> J.Crew's Spring 2012 collection offered plenty of seriously-chic clothing for next season — but there were some equally (if not more) covetable accessories on display as well. Bags were drenched in sherbets and primaries, while shoes were printed with ocelot or woven in two-tone leather. Also on deck: Panama hats, Jenna Lyons glasses, and super-size resin bangles. See them all up-close here.
>> The Lebombo Lodge in South Africa, "an easy laid-back attitude", something called "Afriluxe" — these were the touch points for Michael Kors Spring 2012 collection. And so, out came staples fit for a Sub-Saharan getaway: utility dresses, breezy caftans, cargo trenches, relaxed ponchos. Kors stuck to the safari theme with colors and fabrics as well: taupes and olives in washed-clay poplin and distressed cashmere, with some zebra prints and python skins for good measure. If Kors likes a safari, he especially likes a modern one; he kept his silhouettes neat without a hint of roughing-it in sight.
>> The pervasive florals on the runways were leaching into street style all through Tuesday. Julia Restoin-Roitfeld turned up in an uncharacteristically bright yellow floral dress; Taylor Swift attended Rodarte in a floral lace dress; and Karlie Kloss, Lindsey Wixson, and Cecilia Dean were all running around wearing the same mini-floral chiffon dress: Kloss and Dean in a blue version, and Wixson in red. All those —plus looks from Natalie Massenet, Karolina Kurkova, and more — in the slideshow.
>> Last night, Stella McCartney celebrated her 40th birthday with a small flock of famous friends. Among those who gathered at the fete, held inside the London landmark Aspley House: Kate Hudson (in coral Elie Saab) and her fiance Matt Bellamy; Bono and Ali Hewson (in Edun); Tom Ford in a velvet suit; Kate Moss (in an Azzaro jumpsuit); and her father Paul McCartney and his fiancee Nancy Shevell. Gwyneth Paltrow, too, joined the festivities — which included an after-party at the Groucho Club in Soho — and was later spotted leaving with two mugs, printed with photographs of McCartney as a baby.
