September Vogue Ad Pages Drop From 727 to "Over 400" in Two Years

>> Earlier this week it was announced that for the first time ever, Elle is leading Vogue in ad pages for the year.  The biggest issues of the year — for September — close this month, and while Vogue's publisher Tom Florio is making no final predictions, he did tell the NY Post, "We'll have over 400 pages of advertising."  He claims Vogue's share among high-end fashion and beauty advertisers is still up even if the number of pages is dropping. "We're a profitable book," he said. "Not as profitable as we were in 2007, but very profitable."

But as Jezebel points out, over 400 pages is a major drop from the 727 ad pages — the most ever for Vogue — in the September 2007 issue covered by RJ Cutler's documentary and even the 607 ad pages boasted in last year's September issue.  So is the recession all there is to blame, or is Anna Wintour's method no longer working?
