Michelle Obama Picks Isabel Toledo for Inauguration

Tue, 01/20/09 — 09:45:43 AM

>> This morning, Isabel Toledo received an unexpected big boost in the national eye — Michelle Obama wore the yellow coat and matching dress Toledo specifically designed for her to the inauguration, paired with green Jimmy Choo Glacier pumps.

Toledo didn't know for sure that Obama would pick her designs — which thirteen people in her studio worked on over the Christmas holidays — until this morning, when she turned on the television.  "We had no idea. We hoped she would wear something because she has bought Isabel's clothes before. We never know what's going to happen," her husband Ruben Toledo said.  "It's just another shock, but a great shock."

The dress and coat are made of Swiss wool lace, backed with netting for warmth and lined in French silk.  As for the choice of color?  "I wanted to pick a very optimistic color, that had sunshine,” Isabel Toledo said. “I wanted her to feel charmed, and in that way would charm everybody."

While she's long been critically well-received, Toledo has long flown under the radar, particularly since she was pulled from her acclaimed run at Anne Klein two years ago.  She said this morning that she didn't even have a PR person to help bring her designs to Mrs. Obama's attention, so perhaps this turn of events will provide the bump she needs.

I'm sorry, but I was SO disappointed. I usually love the way the First Lady dresses (and love getting to call her the First Lady now). But I really did not like that look. Not at all.

I have to agree with the above poster. The concept was good and I love her idea to use young designers, but the execution didn't fly on camera. Someone should have dressed up Michelle a few weeks ago in the gold ensemble and video taped her to see how the outfit would appear to the TV audiences. I'm afraid it looked ill-fitting and a bit 'rangey'. And I love Isabel Toledo's designs and so many of Michelle's other clothes choices!

The little girls were very cute, though. And I think it's fun that they were dressed in J. Crew clothes!

I am curious to see what Michelle will choose for this evening's parties.

Take a deep breath & accept the New First Lady, she's the Af. Am.(Black) version of Jackie O (for those too young to know Jackie O), Mrs. John F. Kennedy!!! Are you ready to graduate, your taste in class & style in dressing? Mrs. First Lady Obama has class & is strong in character to spread her wisdom plus she is prepared to teach you something new.

THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW AGE!!!!!!!

Dial it down DStone1003. Not every criticism of one of her outfits is a criticism of her or a sign that the author of said criticism does not have mature tastes. Get over yourself and off your high horse. A lot of folks in the blogosphere are saying the same thing today - we love the First Lady, we think she has amazing taste, even like I Toledo as a designer but that today's outfit was a misstep. It made her look shapeless (and she has a great shape) and the color didn't work on camera.
No biggie. The world has more important things to worry about.

At the Inauguration, the First Lady should not overpower the President. She did. She looked larger than he did in that Christmas Tree of an outfit. At the Inaugural Ball, the First Lady is EXPECTED to over power the President. Let's hope she looks gorgeous--and has a different designer--for the Ball!

I have disagree. I thought the dress color and michelle looked great on tv. I suppose it isn't that shapely but everyone had coats on anyways. It was a nice splash of color and elegant.
