>> Despite all the cutbacks at Men's Vogue and Fashion Rocks last week, today Anna Wintour has reason to celebrate — it's her 59th birthday!  We're celebrating with a trip down memory lane; The gallery below is a collage of Anna Wintour in her early years as editor of Vogue, when her bob was darker, her skirts were shorter, she smiled more . . . but the sunglasses and the trademark scowl were still intact.

Feb. 2000: Tired of waiting for the Vera Wang show to start.
Dec. 1990: Rocking the sequined minidress at a screening.
Oct. 2001: Making a rare appearance in jeans at the 2001 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards.
June 1994: Escorting son Charlie Shaffer to The Lion King premiere.
Feb.1990: They might not be the Chanel sunnies she wears today, but 18 years ago, the trademark sunglasses were already in
Feb. 1990: Same goes for the trademark stare.
Nov. 1991: Sheer gold at a holiday benefit, with then-husband David Shaffer fading into the background.
Dec. 1988: Shortly after her appointment as Vogue editor in July 1988, at the Costume Institute Gala.
July 1990: Wearing a t-shirt and having a grand old time at 7th On Sale with Patrick Demarchelier.
Nov. 1993: Taking daughter Bee Shaffer to the premiere of The Nutcracker.
Dec. 1991: Sheer top, cleavage, and miniskirt? Not the Anna we know today.
Apr. 1993: No couture or beige mules here — only a sweatshirt, leggings, and white flats for a Pediatric AIDS Foundation benefit
Dec. 1990: Having a laugh with Donna Karan at the Costume Institute Gala.
Sept. 1991: Fanning the flames with long-time friend Karl Lagerfeld.
Nov. 1990: With Uncle Karl at 7th on Sale, who is inexplicably wearing an Anna button.

My boyfriend @ the time (now husband) & I were in a restaurant in Bellport, Long Island, several years ago - lots of the fashion industry spent the summer there - I was wearing some wacky/cool outfit & I could see her appraising me approvingly all night. She's actually much nicer in person. Happy birthday Anna!
